About
My initial training and career was as a graphic designer, pens, paper, layouts, a drawing board… Then Apple Mac became the tool of choice for a designer and I soon realised that sitting in front of a computer for hours on end was not for me. After a couple of years travelling abroad I discovered that I loved building things. The camaraderie, coarse humour, physical exercise and having created something tangible to show at the end of a working day was perfect for me. I trained as a carpenter, but also attended plastering courses at The Lime Centre, timber frame repairs at the Weald and Downland Museum and straw bale construction courses in Somerset and Dorset. I do most trades myself, although plumbing and electrics I leave to others. I have read numerous books and manuals on various building techniques since I chose this path in 1997 and still can’t seem to get enough of it.
I tend to keep my projects to a size that allows me and a small dedicated team to fully engage with the project and allows us all to be on the tools. We are happiest working closely with our clients, floating ideas and suggestions during the build, to ensure that the end result is just what was hoped for. Where possible I will only engage in one major project at a time, to maintain focus and momentum for the work. I feel very lucky that after all these years I still absolutely love my chosen profession.
