Our client wished to use load bearing straw bales as the building method for this large ground floor extension. Gravel footings, straw bales from Devon, locally sourced timber, lime renders and washes allowed us to create a truly organic feel to the building. Additionally, within the roof of the original building we converted the loft, raising ceilings to expose old beams and rafters, introducing dormer windows and reslating the roof. The acoustic and thermal properties of the straw bales were astounding even during the unheated construction stage. Oak flooring, window seats, niches and a hand built kitchen from sawn timber complimented the organic shapes within the building.
